Especially in today’s modern society as technology rapidly conquers our daily lives. Our modern advancements have evolved to the point where information and content can be shared with anyone, at any anyplace, and at any time. With the development of social media, graphic entertainment, and direct to consumer advertising, it seems that there is always some type of stimuli that is begging for our attention. Cognitive psychology suggests that most of our purchases and habits are made from properly employed marketing ploys derived from our very habits.
Whether it be the ability to watch a video on YouTube, FaceTime a friend, cruise through social media, or play a game, our very ability to remove ourselves from the technological equation has impeded our very lives. From our personal time, habits, psychology, relationships, health…etc, our lives have become indebted to the very products or apps we use to make “more time.” Unfortunately, it is convenient, fun, and addicting. To add further injury to insult, the companies creating these psychosocial tactics aren’t solely to blame and I’ll tell you why here shortly.
It is our responsibility to drive awareness and social change throughout our very lives.
From sunup to sundown, it is difficult to escape the all too many signs of promotions, billboards, lights, and brand names everywhere. Hell, our colleges and universities dedicate whole programs on how to capture a consumer’s attention. It’s called marketing psychology or consumer psychology. Let’s be honest, in this day and age, it is inescapable. Even in rural areas all of these consumer traps are waiting to be sprung.

Distractions are everywhere, and they come in many different forms. Our own societal norms have called upon the importance of meditation due to the continuous pestering distractions of everyday life. As absurd as it sounds, as a culture we can no longer stand to be silent with our own thoughts. Doubts, negative reflections, and a continuous internal struggle, can cause a major distraction thus hindering our ability to act and think coherently. We have all felt the pressure and anxiety embarking on something uncomfortable. For myself, I experienced many of these feelings when I plunged headfirst towards the goal of being a Marine. I questioned my ability to become a Marine and I had many negative thoughts and doubts that I had to overcome. With time, discipline, and practice, these distractions can be dealt with.
According to modern psychology, a majority of our growth results from our continuous battle with adversity. For without hardship one cannot grow from a plane of nothing.
Unfortunately, adversity has a threshold of diminishing returns so be wary before you jump into your life’s crucible. Distractions can be seen as a liability that is destroying your return on investment. You see, reducing or eliminating distractions will help you focus on the things that really matter. Unlike our forefathers and many successful entrepreneurs, the general population has fallen for these traps. For example, Elon Musk uses his valuable time for continuous growth much like Mark Zuckerberg refuses to squander valuable time, so he wears the same outfit every day. Trust me when I say, this is on the extreme side, but you get the point.
Fortunately, distractions can be managed effectively with a little bit of discipline. So, here we go, 6 Important Tips Needed to Focus in the Modern World
1.Set Clear Realistic Goals
The purpose of setting goal is to have a clear vision of what you want to achieve. Once you have a clear vision, you can then focus on strategy, adherence, and the best route to achieve said goals. Be realistic, ensure first that the goal is attainable. Set short term goals or small milestones then focus on the big picture. Take a tip from our educated Black Sheep, the psychologist. According to modern psychology, one of the most common downfalls when setting short term goals is that the individuals fails to celebrate themselves and their milestones.
Me personally, I wanted to graduate from college, but I knew I wasn’t very good at math. I took it upon myself to take remedial classes, relearn the fundamentals, pre-algebra, to geometry, and even fractions haha. I put in the time, went to tutoring, and didn’t take any short cuts in the process. Four years later, I went from community college to a master’s degree in International Business, something I never thought I would achieve.
So, remember! Once you have clear goals, appropriately set time for them and develop a routine. As we all know, it is essential to develop a routine for growth and in developing productive habits.
Whatever the goal may be, it simply makes sense to OPTIMIZE your time as best you can and PRIORITIZE the things that matter to you. Managing your time is important. We all have an expiration date, an inescapable fate, so it just makes sense to focus on the things that truly matter to you. Use an agenda or write your schedule and routine on a whiteboard or journal to help you organize your days. Furthermore, be disciplined enough to follow through with your plan. In the Marines, we learned the importance of being on time, managing your time, and optimizing your time.
Trust me, being part of an F-18 fighter attack squadron, at times we literally needed to utilize 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to get these aircraft in the air. This is especially true during a deployment, these aircraft are essential for surveillance, and more importantly, protecting the troops on the ground. From this, I learned full well the importance of properly managing the day’s events appropriately.
With so much to accomplish throughout the day, you must have the mental fortitude to keep moving even when it gets physically and mentally tough. These moments of challenge in your daily lives will only make you stronger.
To give you an extreme example of this, let’s take a look at the great Kobe Bryant. At a young age he knew he wanted to be one of the best! He wanted to be in competition with the greats, such as Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan and many others. So, he focused on what he needed to do to achieve his goal. After studying the game, he realized in order to separate himself from good to great, he needed to bring together his relentless effort in combination with the optimization of his time. As a result of focusing on what needed to be done, he prioritized his training by creating a program known as the “666” program. It is called the 666 program, because Kobe would work out 6 days a week, 6 hours a day, for 6 months. As a result of his training, season after season, with each passing completion of his program, he quickly separated himself.
It takes extreme focus to make every workout count even while mental fatigue becomes a greater factor. His ability to focus during every session is the driving factor he is where he is today.
No matter your interest, in order to achieve great new heights, you must not only manage your time, you must also focus and put in the necessary effort to reach your goals. We are not saying go start the 666 program or some crazy routine, but we are suggesting developing a simple yet effective routine. Don’t indulge in something you cannot handle, ease into it, slowly improve, stay disciplined, and the results will come.
You are what you eat, the saying is true. You eat like shit, you feel like shit, very simple explanation here. Try to avoid an unbalanced diet as best you can. Incorporate healthy eating into your lifestyle and the benefits will second to none. Fitting exercise into your schedule is beneficial for many reasons. It helps you stay disciplined and healthy. You don’t have to exercise like a bodybuilder, powerlifter, or a maniacal cross fitter, but simply, find an exercise you enjoy and do it. For me, going to the gym helps keep me stay focused on the task at hand. It also gives me energy, to the point where I really don’t need coffee throughout my workday. Set physical goals for yourself and do your best to improve on them as you progress. For example, I like to write my goals down on a whiteboard to help keep myself organized.

5.Limit Social Media
Next, we know how fun smart phones can be, how addicting social media is, and how easy it is to get lost on your smart phone for hours. Don’t Do It! We need to understand that these activities take up valuable time that you could easily use to cultivate your growth. Within your agenda, limiting phone usage and social media usage is a must. The way I limit my social media and cell phone usage is simply sticking to my routine and agenda.

6. Use your smartphone
Lastly, yes, use your smartphone! Thanks to our technological advances we now have access to large amounts of information. Through this, we have the ability to improve not only throughout our day, but even as we sleep. This is what I call optimizing your time wisely with the proper material available. I personally love listening to podcasts and current events as I am commuting to work. Yes, I love music, however its more beneficial to listen to a business podcast and learn something. This may sound contradicting to our last tip, but utilizing your smart phone to become smarter especially during commutes to and from work can help you gain insight and knowledge about any topic.
Furthermore, Audible, Skill Share, Coursera and many more, have paved the way for online and offline learning.
Interestingly enough, many have forgotten that YouTube, when used wisely, can teach us discernible skills that can create opportunity within our lives.
